  2. Congenital Foot Problems, Their Diagnosis And Treatment

Z-Shaped Foot (Skew Foot)

It is a foot deformity in which the heel turns inward and the middle part of the foot turns outward. It should be surgically corrected. The child is operated after one year of age. It is usually accompanied by the other diseases. The aim of the operation is to obtain a foot that is kept firmly on the ground and performs daily activities.

Accessory Navicular

It is an extra bone located on the inner side of the foot. In case of complaint, it is treated surgically.

Polydactyly

It is characterized by extra toes. There are generally six toes. X-ray should be taken for diagnosis. The side that is not attached to the bone is removed surgically.

Syndactyly

It is characterized by the fusion of fingers and/or toes.

Congenital Vertical Talus

It is the second most common congenital foot problem after pes equinovarus. It is characterized by a collapsed foot. It can be seen alone or together with the diseases like Spina Bifida. Some of them are treated by serial casting. Some requires a surgical intervention.

Tarsal Coalition

It occurs in a very small proportion of children who are thought to have a flatfoot. The flatfoot is rigid and does not improve. The reason for not improving is the tarsal coalition. It is usually accompanied by many diseases. If there are complaints, it should be corrected surgically.
