Surgery for Muscle Release behind the heel and the leg

11 February 2016 by Ortopediatri Yazari

Muscle Release Surgery

Gastrocnemius muscle is located behind tibia between the knee and heel. An increased strain in this muscle due to the increased spasticity in such diseases as cerebral palsy causes tiptoeing and the disruption of the walking biomechanics. Depending on the assessment of the pediatric orthopedist, in these cases, this muscle may be released via the sarcolemma with an incision of approximately 3 cm slightly below the midline of the tibia. At the same time, the Achilles tendon may be released behind the knee at the tip of the muscle again depending on the examination.

Postoperative Period in Muscle Release Surgery

Depending on the examination performed during the operation, a casting may be applied to the patient. In the absence of a cast, the patient is provided with a support device (brace) to keep his foot in the appropriate position after surgery. Patients who were able to walk before the surgery can walk after the surgery with the casting or brace. The pediatric orthopedist controls the patients on the 10th and 21st days.
