Tibialis Anterior Tendon Transfer
In-toeing and out-toeing may be occur in the anterior part of the foot in children with cerebral palsy due to the muscle spasm or clubfoot disease. As a result of the evaluation by the pediatric orthopedist, the location of some part of the tendon of the tibialis anterior muscle is changed on the anterior aspect of the ankle, so that the deformity caused by an excessive contraction of this muscle is prevented.
After tendon transfer, a casting is often applied to maintain the current position and to protect the tendon from trauma during the healing phase. After six weeks of casting application, physiotherapy is started by protecting the operated area with auxiliary devices. Children who were able to walk before surgery can walk after the surgery with the casting.
Casting application
After the casting application, the blood circulation of the foot is monitored by the pediatric orthopedist for a while. With a training provided to the parents, it is recommended to open the cast and consult the doctor if any swelling, bruising or excessive discomfort occurs. The patients are invited for a control examination on the 10th and 21st days.
